Among America’s “newest” dining destinations of note, historic Athens -- home of City Hall’s spectacularly unsuccessful double-barreled cannon, facing north -- claims an enticing line-up of eateries from just plain good to fine and fancy. Athens’ restored historic downtown teems with independent eateries allowing patrons to savor meals in art-filled, one-of-a-kind buildings. Chef / owner Hugh Acheson’s Five & Ten on Lumpkin Street, heralded by Food & Wine, does a tasty frogmore stew and fun twists on standards. Folks in search of old-fashioned milk shakes and burgers flock to the Add Drug Store, also on Lumpkin. On the corner of Clayton and Thomas streets, The Bluebird has lines of patrons out the door, hungry for Indian dishes, vegetarian fare, omelets and whole-wheat biscuits. The Grit on Prince Avenue, arguably Athens’ best known restaurant, focuses on Southern Vegetarian cuisine, with lots of vegan choices and to-die-for desserts. The Grill on College Avenue operates 24/7 with a juke box blaring and feta dressing to go with crinkle-cut fries. Clocked!, known as a hipster hangout, also is renowned for a fried, yet not greasy line-up including home-made tater tots. The Foundry Park Inn & Spa, on one of Athens’ oldest historic downtown sites, serves American cuisine including chicken with sweet onion jam within the ambiance of Hoyt House and more casual fare like brat sanwiches and fried ravioli with music within the circa 1850 brick and stone foundation Athens Steam Company Pub. Nightlife and music thrive all over Athens, the city that nurtured R.E.M, the B-52's, and Widespread Panic, continuing to offer a night life music platform to dozens of promising new bands.
